Bio

Athena is a second-year student in the Master’s in Psychology program at San Diego State University with a Physical and Mental Health research emphasis. She has Bachelor of Arts degrees in Psychology and Studio Art with a Graphic Design Concentration from the University of Redlands, where her senior research capstone explored appearance ideal internalization and body appreciation among young adults.

Athena’s research interests center on social determinants of physical and mental health disparities to inform prevention and intervention efforts, with a focus on body image and eating disorders. Currently, Athena is leading a mixed-methods project examining sociocultural and intergenerational influences of body appreciation among Latina mothers and their preadolescent daughters. After earning her master’s degree Athena plans to continue her studies in a doctoral program in Psychology.
